Coming off of our two ultra successful group DIY projects and a welding night with the CWB, we were so full of pride and vigor that we were ready to truck on and create programming for the remainder of the spring and summer. But, it turns out that founders of initiatives need breaks, too. We decided to take the month of May off for some serious R&R and to adjust to our brand new full-time jobs.

Back in April, Jo graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering Co-op and trust us, we definitely celebrated! This is a huge milestone and Jo worked very, very, very hard to achieve this. Jo is now working as an Materials Engineer-In-Training with Acuren and loving it! Mack started her position as a Materials Engineering Student with PCL Industrial and spends her days learning about pipeline welding and and complexities of project specifications.

We are officially back at in the shop and it's suffice to say we are loving the sunshine and so excited for our summer programming (the schedule is below!!). ☀️

We are excited to announce our programming for summer and up until September 15 2022. We have dates for shop orientations, welding workshops, welding events, and open shop hours!

All programs have a $2 to $5 drop-in cost that can be waived in extenuating circumstances.

Learn about safety in the shop and how to use the tools fundamental to metalworking and welding. Review of our health and safety program, emergency response plan, fire extinguisher use, personal protective equipment and a safety orientation to non-powered hand tools (bench vise, clamps, file), powered hand tools (angle grinder), and the welding machine (GMAW process aka MIG welding) that includes tool demonstrations and practice time.

Note: You will need to be present for the whole shop orientation session to be fully trained up!

*Shop orientation is a pre-requisite
Evening workshops for developing a welding workshop skill such as MIG welding, stick welding, angle grinding techniques, and more. Come and go as you please!

*Shop orientation is a pre-requisite
Drop in time for you to use all of our tools, equipment, and consumables to your heart’s delight! Open shop hours are for you to come and go as you please 💖 Just schedule a time at and we will open the shop for you!

Evening events with a guest speaker for fabricating a small project (build your own…, metallurgy fundamentals, etc.)

We made a kickass video to show our appreciation for Miller Electric's sponsorship of us, The Red Bench! We are incredibly grateful for their generous support and donation of brand-spankin'-new welding PPE and a Miller Multimatic 220 welding machine. This video features our very own members sharing their experience with Miller equipment and gives the viewer a sneak peek inside the shop.

Thank you to our members who participated in this video and we are happy to report that Miller loved this video so much that they are going to repost it on their website. Sorry, what!??! We are SO excited! Thank you, Miller!

AWS Meritorious Award

We are very excited to share that we are the recipients of the American Welding Society (AWS) International Meritorious Certificate Award!

"This award is given in recognition of the candidate’s significant contributions to the worldwide welding industry. This award should reflect service to the international welding community in the broadest terms."

This is a significant achievement and we are so honored to be recognized by the AWS in such a generous, meaningful way. Thank you to our nominators - Tom Lienert and Michael Krupnicki, past President and current Vice President, respectively - for being our allies and biggest supporters at the AWS!

We are hoping to visit Atlanta, Georgia for the upcoming FABTECH 2022 to accept this award in person. Fingers crossed we can find the funding we need to get there!

CWB Podcast Round 2

The Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) Association has invited us back into the booth for another "year in review" type podcast with it's host, Max Ceron! Remember the podcast we did with Max last year? That was before we even had a shop space! In this podcast, the three of us reflected on the past year and what took The Red Bench from idea to the fully functional, ultra-successful workshop it is today. What a journey it's been!

Thanks to Max and the CWB for having us on their podcast once again! Perhaps we should make this an annual thing? 😃

We seek to create a low-barrier, membership-based space for women and gender diverse people to explore a skilled trade on their own terms by providing access to a fully-equipped workshop. The Red Bench will provide tools, hardware, and consumables for use as part of a membership agreement. The first iteration of the shop will offer members access to basic hand, power, and metalworking tools with a focus on welding

The Red Bench aims to become a community hub that shapes a more diverse culture in trades and technology. We have a practical goal and a community goal. The practical goal is to inspire women and gender diverse people to develop confidence in their technical ability, work with tools, make or build things, and pursue a hobby or career in a skilled trade. The community goal is to bring women and gender diverse people from all walks of life to one place where they can be themselves, make new friends, mentor or be mentored, and share ideas.

Thank you very much for reading! Tune in next month for more from us at The Red Bench.
